Abstract/

With an ever increasing population of migrants in East Asia, the multilingual phenomenon has emerged rapidly on campuses of Japanese universities. Accordingly, we are faced with a transformation in the education of foreign languages assisted by ICT, which includes the utilization of multilingual and multicultural backgrounds and resources, and enhancing communications and group interactions among outstanding students and experts. This paper is a case study of Chinese distance learning carried out at Waseda University, which includes not only assisting services such as Multimedia Video on Demand System (MVDS) and machine translation but also a Multilingual Chatting Support System which is utilized to improve classroom practices and enhance the interaction between students and teachers. In particular, the MVDS is proved to be effective in stimulating group interaction among attendance. The chatting lesson about “Modern Chinese Society” that students of several nations attended exposes the problems in multilingual and multicultural communication. Along with our introduction, we discuss several issues involving “multilingual campuses”: 1) The trends of language obstacles, opposing opinions and indifference occurring in posting and chatting activities; 2) A case study on “unsolvable problems” caused by extrinsic nature; 3) How the system users such as students, teachers, and researchers make the most advantage of ICT tools; and 4) How to detect “unsolvable problems” and manage them properly to improve the human-based management in the education of foreign languages.
